However, when the robbery doesn’t go to plan, the three escape into the forest. Unbeknownst to them, they have Officer Leo in tow not far behind…

Meanwhile, Hetty Redburn is the fire control officer working at the Saranac Fire Authority Centre. The one in charge of fire safety in Adirondack Park.

Colonel Paul Moller, an Air Force pilot is taking off when he and his crew begin to have trouble with all four engines of the plane. They quickly realise there is nothing more that can be done and bale out, leaving the plane to crash to the ground in a fiery explosion.

When he lands, he meets a man names John, who helps him deal with the injuries sustained in baling out. Moller is also informed that a large fire has broken out in the forest and could well be moving their way.

In their move to escape the fire, they bump into Kathy Ryan, who appears to be a journalist looking for a scoop on the fire. The three make their way together towards any safety they can find.

So begins the mad scramble to safety for all those within the reach of the violent, uncontrollable fire; devouring all in its path.

Can the fire control teams to anything to quell this wild beast?

And what can those stranded few do against such destruction?

I wanted to like this book. I know the locale which is the Adirondacks and the premise of the story sounded interesting. However, I could not get past the first couple of chapters due to obvious mistakes. These included broadcasting the day's temperature in metric, having Mike earn essentially a British style university degree in the military (in three years), and other such mistakes. It is as if the author took a British story and imposed it on the North American landscape.

Fireball eBook Peter MacAlan Reviews

I liked the book despite the European references. The author must have spent time here as living close to the setting, I recognize most all of them. I would have given it a higher rating if I wasn't left hanging at the ending, or is it?
Excellent book. Every page was filled with adventure. The author puts you there with each character.
Well written adventure tale, some issues, but very readable. However, it ended with an unannounced cliffhanger ending which I absolutely despise. Will not be reading any more by this author.
There were some errors in aircraft in the book...the aircraft that crashed did not have propellers that could be feathered, the author should have done more homework in this area. Also, the ending just felt wrong...unless the author is planning on a sequel. Otherwise the story was great, lots of plot twists and turns and more excitement than many stories. Overall a good read.
Very good read with strong action. My only complaint, which caused breaks in the reading is the author used too many non-american words. A US radio station does not give the weather forecast in Centigrade. The Fire Control HQ is a Center, not Centre. The saloon automobile is a station wagon. Every time I read one of these, it caused me to stop, breaking the narrative.

And WHY is there an F-15 Eagle fighter jet on the cover. Nothing in the book has anything to do with this aircraft.
I out and out liked this book and it rather surprised me that I did. There are some factual errors and obvious melodrama, but MacAlan follows less in Arthur Hailey's footsteps and more in Ken Follett's. He amps up the tension and keeps bureaucratic intrigue from becoming soap opera, leading to an engaging story of a huge forest fire and those who are trying to survive and slow it. Sure, there is a coincidence appleanty, but it didn't halt my enjoyment.
This book was very well written but I would expect that from the author, Peter MacAlan aka Peter tremayne. The problem was that there were just enough European measurements used to let the reader know that this was not told from an American point of view even though it occurred at lake placid New York with all the characters being American.
I wanted to like this book. I know the locale which is the Adirondacks and the premise of the story sounded interesting. However, I could not get past the first couple of chapters due to obvious mistakes.
